Stromatolites are layered colonial sedimentary structures predominantly formed by photosynthetic microorganisms, such as cyanobacteria. They are the oldest living fossil, which are primarily responsible for putting oxygen into the atmosphere. Their origins date back over three billion years and were the dominant life form on Earth for more than two billion years. Modern day stromatolites are rare, and can often be found in parts of Australia.
