Scaphites ammonites are extinct cephalopods known for their distinctive shells, featuring a tightly coiled juvenile stage that transitions into a straight, hook-like adult body chamber. Found predominantly in Late Cretaceous marine deposits, these marine invertebrates had chambered shells for buoyancy, likely preyed on small organisms, and are important index fossils, with common South Dakota specimens showcasing iridescent shells and prominent ribs.
