The smoky color comes from natural radiation (in reference to the proximity of other radioactive minerals) or natural irradiation. This particular Quartz variety forms in masses and crystal structures of all sizes. It can be found all over the world where the best specimens have come from Brazil, Australia, and the New England region of the United States.
