Campo meteorites refer the impact site Campo del Cielo ("Field of Heaven/Sky") where these meteorites are found.
References to the site date back to 1576, when an Argentinian provincial governor commissioned the military to search for a fabled mass of iron that the natives used as the metal source for their weapons. When asked the natives said a large mass had fallen from the sky in a place called Piguem Nonralta, which in Spanish translate to Campo del Cielo.
