Ammonites are an extinct type of cephalopods similar to squids and octopuses, however, ammonites had a tightly coiled spiral shell that they used to propel themselves through the water. They first emerged in the Triassic Period (240 million years ago) and survived until the Cretaceous Period (65 million years ago). These fossils can be found around the globe, with the most common locations being Morocco, Canada, and Antarctica.
