Tourmaline is a borosilicate mineral (Al6B3Fe3H10NaO31Si6) rich in aluminum, iron, and sodium with a trigonal crystal structure. Commonly black in color, it also has a wide range of colors in the rainbow depending on its chemical composition. Tourmaline has a unique property of being naturally polarized and able to generate voltage when heated, which has been used by chemists and jewelers since its discovery in the 19th century as a consistent source of polarized light in research and gem polishing.
