Zuni bears are carved by the Zuni (Native American Pueblo people) in New Mexico. According to the Second Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology from 1881 the Zuni partitioned the world into six regions: north, east, south, west, above and below. This Zuni bear is carved from Jasper. Jasper is an opaque to slightly translucent variety of the silicate mineral chalcedony often having prominent bands, swirls and eyes. These unique patterns along with a variety of colors make Jasper a great rock for house-hold decoration and jewelry.
