Lapiz lazuli is a deep-blue metamorphic rock that forms in association with pyrite, calcite, and lazurite. Lapis name comes from the Latin word for sky or heaven. Its deep, almost entrancing blue has made it one of the oldest prized minerals in history with mines being uncovered that date back to at least 7570 BC and beads as far back as the neolithic period. Notably it was also used as the basis for the expensive and prized pigment, Ultramarine( literally meaning " beyond the sea"), used by Renaissance painters especially when depicting the Virgin Mary.
