Petoskey stones were formed when fossilized rugose coral colonies, about 350 million years old, were broken free and plucked up by glacial movement causing them to wear and lose their edges- becoming pebble-like in appearance. The fossilized patterns in the stone are difficult to view when dry, but emerge when wetted with water or polished by a lapidary. These fossilized stones are uniquely native to the lakes of Michigan.
