Carnelian is an orange and red variety of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline quartz (SiO2). It is formed by the intergrowth of two silica minerals (Moganite and Quartz) that have contrasting crystal structures. Its name was derived from the word 'Corneolus' which refers to the Cornelian cherry, a deep red plant species that's native to Southern Europe. Today, Carnelian can be found in a variety of locations like Brazil, India, Madagascar, and Uruguay.
