Ammonites were an extinct ocean-dwelling mollusk belonging to the class cephalopoda. The characteristic spiral patterned shells display leaf-like structures called "sutures". These early marine life forms first appeared in the fossil record approximately 400 million years ago during the early Devonian period and did not go extinct until the end of the Cretaceous period approximately 65 million years ago. Ammonite fossils can be found in many countries around the world.
